Today I decided to give some TLC to one of my coinsets and seal it away.

I had it for a while. Its the last issue of New Zealand Coins before they switched to decimal. I did not notice it because they where sealed.

When I took them out I was stunned !!

These according to the label of the seal where selected coins made by The Royal Mint london and issued by the treasury Wellington.

Take a look

I mean whos idea was that !!!!

So someone before they sealead away these coins obviously cleaned them they pretty much all have it to some degree except the 3 and 6 pence

I just cant believe it !!

I tried looking online to see if that happened to someone else but couldnt find anything.

Pretty funny... Made my day

It is also short on luster

Its just a circulation set. I guess you guys would call the coins mint state. However at the time those sets were produced they were regarded as just souvenirs not really collecting material. There was no real care taken with the coins, they were just taken from the bag they were literally dropped into after striking and put in the plastic. The same sort of thing happened with the Waitangi Crown in 1935(& 1936) as they came out of the press they were dropped into the collecting bag/bucket so a great many of that coin are bag marked.
On the sets I wouldn't even be surprised if the mint workers gave them a good rub with a cloth before they stuck them in the plastic. I actually find them pretty uninteresting( Familiarity breeding contempt?) they will never be very valuable as there were heaps made( Not the Waitangi Crown of course)

More like doo-doo state.

they could have at least not rub them.

It also looks like iron wool was used rather than a cloth.

Oh well :)

The Waitangi Crown Certainly has a low mintage and there are 2 issues proof and regular. Even in this case they just dropped the non proofs into a bin ?

I'll have to check my references but I believe even the first group of proofs were treated abysmally. There were complaints hence a second striking in 1936.
