While I think that many of the "First Spouses" played important roles, especially in more recent times, I do not think they need to have a coin series. I really like the idea of the new Presidential $1 coins, however, I am not in favor of the first spouses, and I cannot see that I would collect any of them.

Instead of the wives I really wish it would have been a long line of historical and inspirational people in American history that were Not apart of the US Government. Such as King, Doolittle, Edison, Ford, Flanagan, Tubman , and various others that had an impact on history and the American people in general.

I waiting for the President's First Dogs coin series. If the First Wive's are gold, maybe their dogs should be a platinum series?

A very important point was made in another thread and I think I should say something here. While many of us do not like the Presidential and Spouse coins, there are people who like these and are interested in collecting them. I understand that the posts made above were made as humorous posts, but I am now thinking that it is possible that someone who wants to collect these coins could end up feeling discouraged from sharing that collection with us on CC. Obviously, this is not something I would ever want to see happen. As I stated in the other thread, I feel it is very important that we all respect each others' collecting interests and provide an atmosphere that will allow our members to always feel comfortable sharing their collections and collecting interests with us. I hope someone does get some enjoyment collecting these. One of the great things about this hobby is that there is something for everyone and endless possibilities.

While I am not real fond of any of the recent U.S. additions to the world of coin collecting I am putting together a set of unc. Presidents for my little guy. I will say I am very disappointed that, at this time, I don't have the money to put into all that gold regardless who is on the coins! Darn the luck! Speaking of MY luck! Just how many people have you ever met that lived within a mile and a half of work and they are now looking at a seven and a half mile detour? When it rains, it pours! Speaking of rain! Its so dry here right now our worms have moved to another state! Please send rain!

First of all, I really enjoyed the Spiro Agnew posts. Just think, he WOULD HAVE been President had it not been for his tax misteps. Regarding the gold first lady coins, I'm really going to go against the grain here, but I know our forum welcomes all thoughts, even if some are, well, unique. Frankly, I'm against the "Lady Liberty" coin. We have only had one bachelor President. Perhaps "Lady Liberty" could go along with Buchanan's coin. Just because a wife died before a President took office, or married him after he left office, she was still his wife. Put her on the corresponding coin. For the most part the whole concept doesn't make sense. Gold for the First Ladies? It's a matter of selling bullion, and should be sold for spot.

I certainly echo Susan's sentiments.
Anyone excited about collecting any coin should be encouraged to "go for it!"
I'm sure many coins I collect cause people to shake their head in disbelief, but I get a kick of of doing it, and that's what counts.
So, if you can afford the "First Wives" series, and you think they are attractive, buy them!
That's what collecting is all about. Putting together sets of things we enjoy.

Interesting, but not surprising responses. If you're interested in the value going UP in the future, you should not be buying Lady Liberty and/or Dolly Madison. That much is clear. Get Buelah Monroe (or whatever her name is), THAT will be rare!!

He (James Monroe) married Elizabeth Kortright. He was 27, she was 17.
Due to illness, Elizabeth failed to perform many duties of First Lady. Their eldest daughter, Eliza, often times served as White House hostess.
Based on paintings, Elizabeth was very attractive.

My train of thought has derailed, but I'm going to ask anyway.
Since if Hilary Clinton was First Lady, and she wins the presidency, does that make Bill Clinton the First Lord?
