Once you get the format figured out, it's logical and easy to use. I have the 17th and 19th Century Editions, according to my needs, and both are absolutely invaluable.

it's pretty overwhelming at first. It's kinda like using a phone book but it's countries instead split into their own sections. After awhile though I find what I'm lookin for extremely fast after skimming it a few thousand times now.

Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of U.S. Coins. Also, his Proof Coin book is an incredible tome of information.

I picked up a 2005 edition last year for around $20-25 shipped. They're not completely up to date for the last 2 or 3 years in each edition, so I found that an edition that is only a year or two old was still very useful to me.

Calbeto's "Compendium De Ocho Reales". Hands down the best reference for my area of interest.

I've got books that I like better, but the one that's the most dog-eared is a 1994 Blue Book. I gravitate to it mainly because of the mintage totals. It's stuffed full of my notes - grading reference photos, metal densities, coin weights by grade, a photo of a Brasher doubloon, and a an informative brochure on the history of the Waffle House.

I vote for my dog eared Photograde book by James Ruddy, copyright April 1979. Another excellent book that got me started collecting again in the 70's is - The Official Guide to Coin Collecting by Brad Mills, copyright 1974. Great stuff!
