I started this a month or so ago .. but seem to forgot about it, until I run across some Ike's to buy. Today I picked up 40 more. I started wondering if others are doing something similar, and I am curious how they are deciding which Ike's to buy .. or not buy. When I am finished with this box I hope to have, one roll of BU 40% silver Ikes one roll of clad proof Ikes and the rest clad BU. I know some of the coins I am getting are not quite BU, but once I get the box full it will be easier to swap them out when I find more BU's. What I do when I am going through a group of Ike's is - Look for BU 71 and 72's - Then 73's through 78's - then I look at 72's that might not be BU, but might be TY- 2 or TY 3,s - Then BU 76's Is this what others are doing? Of course I look for any 40% BU's, but I have not been seeing many of them local lately. I only have 6 BU 40%'er so far .. but I can tell this will be one of my favorite rolls, when I have all 20. I do have a complete roll of clad proofs ... but the silver BU's ones ... are my favorite. With todays purchase I am at 380 coins .. Edited by GR58 08/29/2013 5:51 pm

Are these circulated Ikes? Or Proofs? Or Special Mint sets?

There is a roll of Clad proof coins .. from proof sets.
Some BU 40% Ike's from blue packs
and a lot of "P" and "D" Bu coins .. many cut from mint sets

Quote: What you going to do with the proofs? Put them back in the roll ... put the roll in the box. Same as all the rest. I have a completed Dansco album. I am not even sure what I am going to do with any of them. Just thought it would be cool to have a box of 500 coins. It is turning out that I like it so much .. might even do two boxes ...

I thought .. why not do 25 rolls .. I was hoping some other CCF members were putting always Ike's in bulk, and share how they pick what coins to buy.

I too have discovered the squared coin tubes! I just bought a couple hundred for my Canadian Cent horde, I will get more for the rest of my coins.
While I don't have nearly as many Ikes as you I do have a couple hundred in flips, mostly circulated. I use a binder for mine.

If you have a line on good quality 72 p and 71 p youre doing better than most. The 72p is like hunting a unicorn for me, I can find an okay one here and there but never anything in quantity where I could actually be picky and sort though.

Mostly coins shops ..
I have been in coin shops .. a few different ones in this area, where they are buying collection and don't really want to buy a large amount of Ike's. Sometimes 50 to 200 coins. I will offer to buy them, to save them from taking them to the bank. I spend a lot of time in LCS's, so I run into a lot of situations like this.
Sometimes they are wanting to dump a lot of mint sets .. and I can get them for near face.
I try to sort out the better coins .. and dump the rest at the bank.
And there are a few times a year, through friends and family, I buy collections. When this happens I keep the coins I want, and sell the rest at LCS.

Going back to putting my Dansco Ike album together, I found out how hard it is to get nice 71 and 72's, so I agree ... as most know they were not in the mint sets .. so they can't be harvested there. So 71/72 Ikes are what I look for first .. I think I have some good ones .. but I pretty much buy them and put them in the rolls .. maybe I will sort through them when I get a full box.

If they were mine, at some point (perhaps after a beer or two), I would put them all in a big pile in the living room, and dive in.
