the curl end of the 9 looks blunt, and the tops of the 9, 7, & 0 don't appear to be in line

Agree, both look LD to me... Man, they sure tucked that Mint Mark way up on the date on the one coin! Amazing the contrast between the two MM's on both coins.

They are both LDs. This is a great learning forum and there are umpteen posts on the SD/LD topic. Just archive a few of them with detailed pictures, especially by coop.

large date for sure. One thing that helped me recognize them better at first was by going to coin show or coin shop and looking at a few small date specimens in person. After you see a couple of confirmed small dates it kind of sticks out a bit more and becomes easier to recognize in hand.
