Hello, I found your forums on a search and thought I'd join.
I appologize in advance if this question has been addressed before.

I know nothing about coin collecting but the other day I was able to buy about 100 dollars in Franklin half dollars and 100 dollars in 1964 halves for 200 dollars. I work in a bank, so I guess that's one of the perks
The coins are in varouis circulated conditions (I'm totally ignorant of this) but some are very shiney like they were uncirculated until recently and others are pretty dirty. The vast magority are what you would expect of 50 year old coins.

I was thinking about selling them for a quick turnaround but again, I know nothing of this except there is a market for them.

So I guess my question is ---
How much can I expect to sell 400 ($200) of the coins for?
What would be realistic?
Would you recomend going to a pawn/jewlery shop or put an ad in the city paper?
My main concern is not getting ripped off.

If you can give me any info, it would be appreciated.

thanks
curtis, st. louis

Welcome to the Forum!

I SOOOOO am trying to get a job with a bank and I am jealous!

Realistically:

A half dollar 1964 or earlier is 90% Silver so at current market value that's a little under $5.00 per Half.

Nice Steal ya made there!

Thanks for the welcome, but I would advise not working at a bank because of the pay

If the market bullion value is say 5.00 per half, is that the price that I should ask/expect for each coin?

The only type of collecting I'm familiar with is sports cards from when I was a kid. If a card was worth 10 dollars, you could generally expect to get only 5 dollars in cash for it.

thanks

It's silver. The spot price for silver is about $13.60 an ounce so the price of the Halfs can fluctuate as well. If you were to sell them on ebay Normally you can expect to get spot value for them...sometimes more. You could also take them to a dealer and they could buy them from you for a little under spot.

Welcome to the forum, curtism1234.

Yes, any pre 1964 half dollar is 90% silver and is worth about $5. Thats $5 worth of SILVER. Not the value of the coin. If you have some franklins that are uncirculated and in very good condition, they could be worth hundreds each. The earlier dates tend to be worth more than the later ones. However, I would only advise selling them for bullion price if they are very worn or are a common date.

What I would do is sort through them all, sort them by the dates and mint marks (S, D, or P (not mint mark for P)) located on the back of the coin and right under the bell. When you sorth through them, to make the pricing process a little faster and slightly more accurate, write down how many appear to be uncirculated and how many appear to be circulated. Buying a price guide can only cost you $5 at any large book store and will give you the value of your coins. Buying a Red Book at any book store will cost around $10-$15 and is full of information that you can use to grade, price, and inform yourself on many coins.

I should have mentioned this before instead of jumping the gun.

Also Halfs from 1965-1970 are all 40% Silver and are worth around $2.00 each.

All Dimes, & Quarters 1964 or earlier are also 90%

I would start by doing what Ty said. Sort through them if you are not in need of the money immediately. It can be a relatively drawn out process, and you will probably want to post pictures here for an idea of value on some of the cleaner ones.

As for selling them, I recently sold off some "junk" silver on ebay. I got right at $9 for every face value dollar I sold. Example, take $50 of your halves (100 coins) that are banged up and such. You could expect to get about $450 for this in one lot. If you go this route, please be so kind as telling us what the listing number is.....

Hello curtism1234 and welcome to the forum from another St. Louisan!
Do you live in St. Louis or the metro area? I do not recommend taking those coins to a pawn shop. There is one coin shop in St Louis city(south city on Hampton)- Midwest Money. They are currently paying 8.5-9x face value for 90% silver. They are one of the strongest buyers in the area for silver coin and bullion. Any nicer uncirculated coins would bring more than silver value.

Curtism1234,

Bring em' over and let's have a look! I live in the metro east. I've sold rolls (20 coins) of '64 Kennedy's on ebay and realized $95~$105 per roll minus selling fees. They sell very well there for bullion value. I would recommend selling them as rolls (20 coins) if you don't mind multiple listings. Larger lots don't attract quite the "feeding frenzy". Definitely check them for collector coins. You're going to need help if you are new to the hobby. Good Luck!

Nothing like buying $1600+ worth of silver for $200. That's an awesome find, although it sucks for us roll searchers when a bank employee realizes what they have and buys it before we get a chance to.

Nevertheless, congrats.

PS and welcome to the hobby.

I'll try to take a few pics of some of the coins.

I don't have a digital camera so it'll take some time.

thanks for all the advice though
