Hey guys, I am a young coin collecter and was wondering if getting into roll searching is a good idea, I have bought a few rolls of old pennies and found a few old indian heads. Do you guys buy the rolls off of ebay? I am interested in doing some roll hunting! And what demonination of rolls do you suggest for me, thinking to myself that I have over 1000 wheat pennies!

to CCF fellow Michigander. I roll search cents and have been through around 1.3 million and counting. Found a lot of neat stuff but will never make me rich.Getting into RS is a good idea for a "pass time" kinda thing but like I said you will never get rich doing it. I recomend starting out with cents, more bang for your buck. If you want to look for silver then try halves. Keep us updated on any cool finds that you make and as you know... Good luck, John1

CoinCollecter97 to CCF Michigander. As BadThad said, Quote:Stay away from ebay rolls. They are mostly a gimmick if not all a deceptive way of luring you in to buy the roll. You can go to your bank and just ask to exchange rolls or exchange $25.00 for a box of 50 rolls. Tell the teller you are new to searching and would like older rolls or boxes. Hopefully the bank you find is cooperative some are not. Quote: I have over 1000 wheat pennies! Have you looked into any for errors/varieties?

Formulate a plan, gain as much knowledge as you can about what typical returns can be expected from coin roll hunting and the benefits/problems people run into. There are people that discuss their finds and issues concerning selling their finds here so everything you need are here on this site and

dude! yeah like they said the ebay rolls aren't the best thing to buy. But you can buy coins at face value from the bank and I've found some pretty sweet stuff. I would recommend nickels. You can find silver and older coins and cool errors too. Check out the roll searching discussions!

Welcome! As previously stated, it is never a good idea to buy rolls off of ebay. There is literally nobody who is senile enough to roll up gold and silver coins in penny and nickel rolls. Heck, you'd be lucky if those rolls don't ship full of paper, since "who knows what else could be inside!" As for roll hunting, I personally enjoy nickels the most. I stopped in about 2011, but I consistently found one War Nickel and one Buffalo nickel (the 1913-1938 variety) per Brinks box from Bank of America. I usually averaged about 20 nickels from 1959 and earlier in each box. Pennies are also good, but I never had much luck with them; usually about 5-10 wheaties and a couple S mints per box. I've heard that dimes are good for silver, but I struck out both times I tried a box. Halves are entirely hit-or-miss, but I tend to have better luck with asking bank tellers for individual coins whenever I stop by a bank... much better chance of finding a silver that way. Also, make sure you have a system worked out. Get empty wrappers and NEVER return loose coins to a bank or they'll stop ordering boxes for you. Also, make sure you always cash in your coins at a different bank than the one you get them from, or you'll search the same coins over and over again.

Thanks all I bought a few rolls of halves today (that's all the bank had) and I found the following 1965 silver clad 1970 D! I was pumped to see that knowing how it was only in mint packages. I am hooked on CRH now!

That's quite the find for your first try! Believe it or not, my first silver find from the bank was a 70-D too.
