Im in the UK, so its not easy for me to get US currency and UK currency is boring as heck.

SO, any interesting notes you guys know of? Anywhere to get them - I'm weary of ebay, especially for the older notes.

My current top of the list notes are the HAWAII dollar and VICTORY philipino note. That kind of stuff. And old things like fractional notes but they're pretty pricey.

Don't forget the American colonial and Continental currency! It can be rather reasonably priced, despite its age. And the Continental currency in particular has notes that you Brits were actively counterfeiting!

That would be fun to have. Britannia was pretty sore when you fella took her yanky colonies away, so its unsurprising that a few counterfeits showed up soon after the hostilities began.

How reasonable are the prices? Could I get one for 20 squids? The main problem is postage (like heck does a peice of paper cost £30 to ship across a glorified puddle).

Well, maybe not quite that reasonable, unless you're really not fussy about condition. I was planning to take a good look through the colonials and Continentals at the big Whitman coin show in Philadelphia in about 3 weeks. Maybe I could see if anything there strikes your fancy?
And speaking of old engravings, weren't we to hear from that friend of yours about some translation of medieval French?

Yes, but that didnt come through so well (I never heard anything). I was going to take the leafs in question down to the Prints and Drawings department of the British museum but was worried about carrying them on the tube.

In other news to do with old engravings, I found an ebay seller selling 18th century Parliamentary leaflets for £2-5 each. Might nab a couple. He had one which was the Union between England and Scotland (some lucky sod nabbed that for £23).

At the whitman show, if you find any early notes for under £10, id be happy for that in any condition. A colonial from a British Colony isn't going to be cheap is it?

Didn't mean to highjack your thread. Hope others here will fill you in on the later notes. Fractionals and Educationals are particularly lovely, but I'm not the one to say how many would be in your price range.

I've seen plenty of the Victory Filipino notes in the currency pick at my local coin store. It would cost about $1, if it is in stock. I would be happy to send you one at cost including postage.

Phil VICTORY for a buck? Sweet.

Fractional for 5-10 in good sounds perfect too. I suppose colonial would be around $25 in good?

I'm not really familiar with Colonials but I know they go for more than that, in good condition maybe $40-80? Better ask a collector more familiar with them. Also be wary that Fractional and Colonial notes are very popular collectables so their auctions are very competitive, so you can get them for a decent price as long as one of the bidders isn't extremely eager and extremely rich.

I actually think the Scottish and NI banknotes are very interesting with a lot of variety. They are, admittedly, not cheap if looking for high grade older notes

I would suggest Allied Military Currency (AMC) and/or MPC notes. The AMC notes were issued for 4 European countries plus Japan. They would probably be easier to obtain in Europe than the U.S. and they are widely popular with a lot of reference material in print. Happy hunting!

I'm with Bacchus, I think the UK and other countries' notes are much more interesting than the US notes(after 1928). Our small size currency is dull and boring with the same designs up until recently when they added color(which is ugly).

I guess when you see your countries currency all your life, you tend to like something new and different.

Hello BenByfield,
I love and collect US Currency too.
But how you can write that UK bills are boring? Sorry that is unbelievable.
OK, the Bank of England Notes are often boring but you have a lot of interesting Art on British Paper Money.
Just take a look at Scottish banknotes.
Only in Scotland 27 banks had the right to issue legal tender Currency. Still today 3 banks use this right.
A sensational varieties. Knights, swords, castles and battles.
Queen Elizabeth II. is the most depicted human on banknotes.
You can see her face on Antigua, Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda, Belize, Barbados, Cook Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Grenada, Jamaica, Jersey, Canada, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, St. Kitts, Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent , Grenadines, Malta, Tuvalu, and Cyprus bills. This List is far from all countries which shows the Queen,King George V. or King George VI.
Northern Ireland has so wonderful Banknotes, great.
Isle of Man, awesome banknotes. I prefer the old Americans, but the British Bills are not boring.
I collect also Scottish and Northern Irish notes. If you are interested I can send you examples of this beautiful British art.

Wow, I havent even seen any scottish or NI banknotes. Cool. I should have a looksy at some. The stuff I get in change is just bad. I found a picture of a couple of the scottish notes and they look pretty good - and the UK notes after Dec-Day but before...well, 1990, they're not too shabby, but they're all withdrawn.
