I had this coin on my watchlist, and bidding jumped from $93.30 to $371.00 in the last few seconds.

I'm assuming it was a VAM that was not attributed. Any Ideas?

It's a VAM 63 (S/S right). The old price guide lists it at $600 in MS62. Nice snag for someone who has a sharp eye.

Near as I can tell, 62 is equal to the highest grade known for this coin. It should have been in a dedicated and publicized sale, maybe at Heritage or something, and the seller left a bunch of cash on the table with it.

Yep, somebody grabbed a deal on this one, looks like only two bidders had figured it out before hammer time!

ebay has actually become a more fertile place to cherrypick VAMs than it was at one point - most active VAMmers have abandoned the venue out of disgust.

The problem with ebay is you have to sift through piles of junk to find a few decent Morgans. I've got a long list of sellers excluded from my searches and it only scratches the surface of the junk listed.

About the OP. I had this one pegged all wrong. I thought it was an unbroken star with an over-polished nostril. I guess I need new glasses. I edited my original guess after re-thinking the fact that the coin was probably still in the seller's hands.

That hasn't changed in the ten years I've been doing it. You eyeball 1-2000 coins a week for half a dozen cherrypicks a year. That's all there is to it.
