Hi,

I am researching this coin for a friend of mine and wanted to know if this sample contains a LARGE D, the separated E & S of STATES, and a doubled eagle's beak: a trifecta combination that does not appear in the NGC's VarietiesPlus collection:

I am sorry for the glare on the photos since my diffuser was on vacation.

To make the comparison easier I attempted to place my friend's coin side-by-side to the NGC sample coin displaying a large D:

Next, I will focus on the alleged separation between the 'E' and 'S' of STATES:

And finally I would like to know what is going on with the eagle's beak: MD, DDR, or something else:

In summary does this quarter of my friend possess all of the above features illustrated by the photos?

Finally, if it does totally or only partially contain the featured characteristics, how should this quarter then be classified if it contains additional features not contained in the FS-901 or FS-501 class and not found on the VarietiesPlus list previously referred to at the beginning of this thread?

The type "B" are the proof reverses that were re-used on the 1956-64 Philadelphia quarter reverses.

So your coin is too early and not a Philly coin to be a type "B".

Mint marks are added to the dies and hand punched. They can be in various locations and in varying strength. Some years had different styles of mint mark punches, but there were on the "S" quarters. Hope this helps.
