Hello. I found this penny in my "pocket change" and would like some help knowing what happened to it. Is it worth more than just 1 cent? Some info would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Looks like it was struck through an obverse die cap. Yes worth a lot more than face value.

Thank you for your reply. I recently just got into collecting and am still learning. I haven't been able to find anything about this penny.

Congratulations on your find, it's a nice one! It is hard to tell the mint and date from your pics but it might be 1971-P or 1971-D. of course it might be something completely different, like I said, it is hard to tell. Maybe others will venture a guess. Either way it definitely has additional value above face.

As others have said, struck through late stage die cap. Too bad about the condition. Still, it's a great find from circulation. It seems that quite a number of these are showing up here on the forum lately, being found in this manner.

Thanks for the all the replies. I am learning a lot. I think the coin is in great shape, considering it was change for a soda. I'm new at this but I don't know how to clean the surface dirt off, so I will leave it for a expert. The local coin shop told me that it's only worth $40 maybe $60 at the most. Is that true?

If they would give you $40-$60 I would think that would be great! They are a bit all over the map value wise, but I will say the middle ground seems to be around $20 on the 'bay. I have one running right now that I found coin roll hunting myself. ebay link in my signature. Its at $5.50 right now with about a day to go and quite a few watchers... so I guess we will see.
