Hello,

This is my first post in this forum and would appreciate any assistance or advise any of you coin specialists or hobbyist may have to offer on error coins, specifically an error on a coin I have.

The coin is a 1958 English Shilling. The error is on the Queens head side and it appears a piece of metal has got between whatever stamps the image and the blank metal disc. The result is a flattened piece of metal pressed onto the Queens head.

Please can anyone tell me the name of this type of error, how it happened and whether it is a common error or not?

I have had this coin for years, but never really got around to finding out anything about it until now.

With thanks,

Richard.

rich231: to the CCF!
If you go to Google Images and search
'coin lamination error', you will see lots of examples of lamination errors.
They are caused by impurities in the billet before it was rolled into a strip for the cutting of blanks of the specified thickness.

In the world of error coins, they are reasonably common. Most collectors of error coins have at least one example.

Thanks for your reply and answering my questions.

It is interesting to know that this error occurred so early in the minting process, as opposed to where I thought it had occurred - in the later stages.

I will take a look at some other examples, thanks again.
