Hi I have been interested in coins for years but work did not allow much time to spend on the hobby. But for years I would go into a local coin shop and buy coins I thought beautiful. Now I have retired and am looking at what I have. One coin I got in the late 70's was a 1911 D 2.5$ Indian that was slabbed by PCI. It is labled polished so the price was good. Since retireing I spent some time looking into the different grading companies as well as trying to determine if this coin is polished. It appears PCI is not the top among grading companies. My question is, if I want to sent this coin to another company, which company do you recommend and do I send it in the slab or remove it? Thanks

to the Community! I suggest first posting a few images of the coin in the grading thread first, just to see if it would be worth the cost of grading to send it in. The top 3 grading companies right now are NGC, PCGS, and ANACS. Someone from the USA might be able to help you better.

I would remove the coin from its current slab before doing so as well. Anything they see from a company that isn't one of those 3 will likely bias them into thinking its already been overgraded. Another advantage to cracking it out would be that if you had some other coins you wanted to get graded as well you could send them in all at once and save some money on shipping. PCGS and NGC require a membership. I havent done the math on the NGC ones, but I do know if you select the PCGS 199 dollar membership with 8 free submissions it actually saves you money if you use the 8 free on pre 1964 coins. 8 coins in the 32 dollar tier would cost you 256 dollars to grade, the membership is only 199 so you save 56 dollars on the submission and get the membership free as well.

Thanks guys
I will remove it from the slab, take some pictures to send in. Since I'm so new to this, do I submit the pictures on the topic thread?

Looking forward to seeing this coin. If you are an ANA member you don't need to be a member to submit to NGC directly, there is a link on how to do so on the ANA member page. PCGS would be your best bet on gold IMO. However that all remains to be seen on the coin itself. I'd personally post some photos before cracking it out. Is the PCI holder red ?

Sorry westcoin, I already broke it out to take pictures of the coin. Yes it had a red broader . I will include a picture of the case when I finally figure out how to get these images sized. I am having issues learning the sizing tool on this web site. Thank you for your information. I hope to get it posted on the grading thread tomorrow. Now I have to go look up what the ANA is... I'm a real rookie.

If it was a red banded coin then no issues breaking it out I'd say, green banded or gold banded I might leave it in, will await pictures and help out as best I can for you. ANA = American Numismatic Association - http://www.money.org
