OK, it's actually sort of funny. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...300896630832Seller is all about the big mystery, since the coin is an 1860 trime, not a 1803 cent. But the NGC id is -001 so on a hunch I looked up -002 and it clearly shows a large cent marked 3c silver ( http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/i...661290-002), so that gives us the pair ( http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/i...3661290-001)OK, it's a stupid mix-up and it happened. The 3c silver is AU details, so maybe worth 120-140. The seller wants $ 5 9 0 for it... and when I messaged him/her about it (since I might have been interested in the coin) s/he responded: I have no idea but is a interesting mix up, thx for link on the coin. but u can make a offer if you like to have this odd graded coin. thx for interestI declined... -----Burton 50+ year / Life / Emeritus ANA member (joined 12/1/1973) Life member: Numismatics International, CONECA Member: TNA, FtWCC, NETCC, EveryCountry (online) coin club Owned by three cats and a wife of 40+ years (joined 1983) Author: 3rd Edition of the Sample Slabs book, https://www.sampleslabs.info/

I guess, but not any more... I reported it to NGC and heard back from them this morning...
"Thank you for the email. I contacted the seller and he said that he will send the coin back for us to correct the label."

Why did you contact NGC? What business is it of yours to do so?

Why isn't protecting the integrity of the process the business of all members of the community? After all, we pay a premium for a certified coin...

I for one don't want the Coin market to degenerate into something more akin to the used car market. IMHO we all need to protect our hobby from description errors and outright fraud. Once and a while I will even tell ebay sellers that they have it wrong...most take it well but you get the odd idiotic optimist. I recall a contemporary fake being sold as a genuine article. Tried to point it out to the seller and noted he would get more interest if he accurately described it...He told me I didn't know what I was talking about so I reported the listing and it was taken down. The seller accurately described the coin being sold, so I fail to see what the exact issue is here.
You were out of line to contact NGC to report the error holder. It is not your coin nor your holder.
People in the coin community need to take a tip from the Fugio Cent.

That's exactly what the thieves, trollers and counterfeiters want us to do - mind our business. Gives them more latitude to operate without interference.
Not in my life.

I've never bought a certified coin yet, though I have considered buying them.
I think that BStrauss3 did the right thing to report, it could have been a fake holder.
I think that NGC should reward the reporter and the owner for helping NGC correct their mistake and rescue their reputation, perhaps with a couple of free certifications.

I had zero worries it was fake. NGC cert #s are the submission-coin#. So since this was -001 I checked -002 on-line and poof, there in -001 was the coin in the wrong holder up for sale @ ebay and there in -002 was the right holder (and the 1803 coin). So I knew it was just a swap. NGC did contact the owner and is in the process of resolving the problem. All good except the seller probably didn't get his $590. What gets me is that people don't seem to do even minimal research. It took not even 30s to figure out the grade of the coin up for bids and what approximately what it was worth (also to see MUCH better pictures)... $120-140 not $590 (yep, as was said earlier, talk about buy the holder not the coin <grin>).
