Well, I never said everything on the Bay is idiot-proof :->... Seller may or may not know better on this piece, but I'd say it's certainly a modern cast replica rather than shipwreck recovery. Most non-beginner collectors seeking out such material should be able to recognize the difference, I would think/hope... The one slightly tricky part of this is that 1738 is a date seen frequently on pillar 8R from several notable wrecks, so you could see someone outsmarting himself on a piece like this.

Now, to contrast:

The "coin" picture in the first link doesn't look silver. It looks more like a copper reproduction, and the crown/world design is off. I hope someone does their homework before buying that, but it has 2 bids so far.

Both auctions are over. For only $70 extra you could have had one that was real.

I wonder what was so attractive about the fake. The coppery color which is so rare on Spanish silver? The imitation corrosion? The mushy details? Or the loop in the hole? Necklace ready! Perfect for that special someone that doesn't mind green stains.

Maybe because it's 8 reales - a piece of eight to the novice - that almost certainly came from a shipwreck?

The seller's Florida address?
