A 1878 Morgan, Unc, but has a stain at the bottom from a staple in the 2X2 it was kept in for the last 50 years. As you can tell by the picture it is no longer in a 2X2! The darkness of the picture is from the lighting when I took the pic. It does have uniform luster except for the stain. Thank's for your help! The stains/toning don't bother me, but I can't agree with unc. Based on the photos I'd go high Almost Uncirculated, but I see some evidence of circulation wear.

Hi...Your 1878-P 7 tail feather looks to be an almost uncirculated 'slider' which means it could go from a high end almost uncirculated to a low end uncirculated. From the lighting your coin looks cleaned or dipped too many times. By that, it is the lack of luster that bothers me. The luster looks flat.

Thank you form the replies.
To my knowledge this wasn't dipped or polished in any way. I'm sure my Grandfather bought this so anything could have been done before it landed in his collection.
I think better pictures would do it more justice. Have to get these to Badthad for a good camera shot.
Thanks

This coin could be anwhere in the AU/BU range. Would it be possible for you to take a picture of the coin out of the holder. The refraction of the light through the holder flattens the details and subdues any luster a coin may have. This is why it's so difficult to determine the grade.

The stain isn't noticeable and it's not that bad. On of of my MS morgans, I have stain right on her eye, giving her a black eye lol.

We're going to need to talk more about this one. I'm pretty sure it's a Long Nock - note the extended end of the arrow shaft, and compare to a pic of one of mine: Here's a similar reverse, with the shorter nock: If it's a Long Nock, referred to as a B1 Reverse, it is of greater interest to a Morgan VAM fan, as they're generally rarer than the other B reverse. The next thing we need to know is if there's remnants from a previous layer of tail feathers peeking out under the new ones. The original 1878 Morgan had 8 tail feathers, which was pointed out to be anatomically incorrect. So, they had to rework the dies to have the correct 7 tailfeathers. Some of those new dies had the tips of one or more of the old 8-tailfeather design still showing on the struck coin. This is yet another possibility of interest to the Morgan specialist. See, there's a problem with Morgan dollars. It's called VAM's. Do a Search for that term, and you'll see what I mean.

Thank you for the information. I read up a little on VAM's and that adds a whole new world to the Morgans. I cropped a close up of the tail feathers and arrows. Pretty sure a tail feather is sticking out from underneath...

Figured I'd see you here, Bryan. I'll be researching this one during the day - I took a day off work.

I've tentatively identified this one based on the eagle's legs and the round blob underneath the olive branch, but there's a couple more things to be seen.
Climb4, can you get me similar crops of the eagle's head/shoulders, and the cotton bolls on the obverse? If you're unsure, those are the two rounded thingies between the leaves, just between Liberty's head and cap. Also, can you tell me if you see doubling on the first couple of stars to the right of the date?

since you mentioned legs I can tell you exactly what it "Probably" is and it ends with a 33 because 33 and "the King Of Vams" is the only one with doubled legs like that and I doubt its the later and if it is I'm on a flight tomorrow to where ever he lives
