Hi, I am new to this forum, and to coin collecting in general.

My dad just gave me his coin collection and I have been wading through a large bag of old coins he collected. One of these coins is a 1952 dime with a collar error (pictured below). The collar is raised all the way around the coin (on both sides), by about a millimeter. This lip has saved the coin face from virtually any wear over the years.

I have been researching this particular error, but I can't seem to find any collars errors that are this severe.

I wanted to share this example with you to see if anyone has seen one like this.

Thanks in advance for your insights,

Deb

To my eyes, the color of the ring looks different than the coin, so I think it's a separate piece added to the coin for mounting to jewelery.
It looks like there is the remains of a tab that could have attached the coin to a chain.

Thanks, DVCollector. Now that you mention it, that's exactly what it looks like. Bummer. :)

Well it is silver with that brass wrapped around it. Probably someone birth year or graduation year.

Hey don't get down! You still have a nice silver dime that you could probably turn into a necklace!

Just be happy!

Thanks, I feel sheepish now because my mom told me it was on a charm bracelet she had as a kid. Oops! Score one for the newbie! :)

with CoinCollector2000! And don't worry, we have all asked our share of regrettable questions (well, I've actually asked much, much more than my share). It's how we learn...

I have made far bigger gaffs. It comes with everything new and you are learning about. Its a great hobby and this is a great forum. And like the others have said you have a silver dime which is still a good thing.
