I still consider myself a novice coin collector, so bear with me. I think this is a die crack though, right?

sure is a die crack. And I'm guessing it is an 1863? Die cracks like this are very common on the copper nickel Indian cents.

Rest in Peace

I don't think it's a die crack.

It appears to have taken quite a hit at the rim.

What I don't know is if that hit happened at the mint or out in the wild.

The uneven wear around the rim is what makes me think that something may have happened at the mint....

Seeing the obverse could help determine if this is PMD or not. If the obverse is worn over this area then it is 99.99% likely PMD. It's a weird looking error because it looks like cracked planchet with a Cud right over the crack. Maybe it's an actual error with PMD.

Die crack with some PMD from a good whack on the coin at the same place.

Don't ignore the possibility that it's a lamination that's been peeled back slightly.
