I inherited the small cent collection me and my grandfather had put together, and as I filled in more holes I expanded the collection to include large cents, and now I am at the point where I am interested in expanding it further to include Pre-confederation pennies as well.

My question is this: Which years were the "dragon slayer" pennies minted, it says 1850-1857 on the coins and Canada site but only listed 1857, 1854, 1852, and 1850. Is this because those are the only years minted?

Further more if I wanted to expand my collection even further back which route should I go if my intention is to try and have consecutive dates as far back as possible? Does anyone have a checklist of sorts? Thanks in advance.

I claim no expertise in this area but I believe anything prior to 1858 is called a token because the colonies/provinces didn't have the authority to mint currency at the time. A Catalogue such as Charlton's Canadian Colonial Tokens is probably your best bet to build your list. On the other hand, there are some from the East coast colonies from pre-Confederation that are actually currency. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI & especially Newfoundland. These are all listed near the beginning of the regular Charlton Vol 1 catalogue. Newfoundland can also be found online at http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...ces-nfld.php and they can all be found at http://www.jandm.com/script/getcatalog.asp?CID=4 (but the prices here don't seem to be kept up to date).

Hi godless, I don't want to confuse you but, I believe the 'dragon slayer' coins are not coins but 'Bank Tokens', if you are looking for Pre-Confederation coins Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, are probably the ones you want.

The Newfoundland series is probably the best to collect as it has more dates than the others.

Hope this helps.

The 'Saint George and the Dragon' bank tokens are a popular series for Canadian token collectors.

They were minted in 1850, 1852, 1852, and 1857. Each year had ONE HALF PENNY and ONE PENNY tokens.

There are several major varieties identified in popular reference materials. Within the series, there

are over 300 sub varieties.

would LOVE to see some pictures of what you have. lately I have been concentrating all of my purchases to anything from about 1812 - 1858.
sooooo much history and variety in these tokens.

so AFTER you post some pictures (!) the best thing you can do is go to abebooks.com and for $9.99 download the reprint of the 1894 Breton catalog.
dont let the french fool you, it is english and french.
(i am in no way associated with abebooks or the sales from the catalog)

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/Boo...Bthe%2Bcoins

it shows illustrations of every merchant token, provincial penny, bank of montreal, dragon slayers etc.
includes mintage numbers and brief history of each "coin".

here is a snapshot of one of the pages
(by "publishing" this my intention is not to infringe on any copyright, but just the same - mods please feel free to delete or alter if it causes any issues)
