Well, there might be a chance. I talked to people at the U.S. Mint a little while ago, and on of the women I talked to, said that there is something planned for the Kennedy half's 50th anniversary in 2014, but what is planned, they are not sure, and I told her that there was a rumor going around about Mint sets with all of the mint marks, and I said I was hoping for a redesign of the reverse of the Kennedy half, just to have something different, and she said there might be a redesign such as this planned, and I asked her if there would be any of these new halves made for general circulation, and she told me that they were going to make some for circulation, and I told her about how, supposedly there is about a 10 year supply of halves, and that, it was said that, when they ran out, they would mint more for general circulation. But to be honest, that could have been close to a decade ago, that I heard about the 10 year supply, because I know it was many years ago, so maybe the half supply is getting low. The woman said she had never heard about the "10 year supply" of halves before, but hopefully, if they do redesign the half, maybe they will try to push halves back into circulation.

I have also heard of special plans for the half dollar next year. And I have also heard mentioned that it could be the last year for the halves. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

YIKES! I hope this isn't true. But I've never heard of any rumors about discontinuing the half, because, halves still make the government money, for those who buy Mint sewn bags and rolls. And from what I heard, there are plans to mint more halves when the current supply is depleted.

UPDATE:

I just talked with a guy from the Mint now, and he says as far as things are right now, there are NO plans to eliminate the half after 2014. We were both talking about how we wished we could get the half and the $2 bill into wider circuation, and I did say, "more $2 bills, less $1 bills = savings of printed costs, more halves, less quarters + savings on minting costs" and he agreed, and I told him that my local Walmart's self checkouts accept $2 bills and halves, and that my local Meijer does not accept the half, even though their coin slots are plenty big enough to comfortably fit the half. And he said "I wonder if my Walmart's self checkouts accept the half" and I told hime that mainly the machines with the coin slot below the scanners are the machines that accept halves, while the ones with the coin slot above the scanners do not. And he told me it was pretty interesting. I also told him "The only coin I really think should be eliminated, is the penny" and he said "Yeah, a lot of people feel that way. Canada has already done it" and I said "Yep I read all about it" and he said "But I don't see any need to discontinue the 50 cent piece" and I said "Yeah, I know, because the government still makes money off the mint sewn bags" and he mention the rolls before I even mentioned the rolls.

So anyway, while this guy did say there are always chances of rumors coming true, he doesn't see them getting rid of halves any time soon. I breathed a sigh of relief, and told him I was glad, because I like the half, and he said "So do I" and he also told me that my idea to get all self checkout machines to accept and dispense $2 bills and halves was a very good idea. So at least some people think my ideas are good.

that would be a real shame if they discontinued the half dollar.. I just bought a mint sewn bag of 2013 halves and was hoping to start collecting them.

I like Kennedy halves and a redesign for the 50th anniversary would be nice. I also agree that we should stop making the penny anymore, it probably costs more to make a penny than the actual value of it.

(Bet you didn't see that one coming )

But yeah, it costs about 2 cents or more to make and with distribtion costs in all of that, to use pennies.

The half could be a really interesting subject choice for the liberty themed coinage if the Kennedy series was discontinued after 2014. They are mostly NCLT now but could prove to be a great collector coin in 90% silver similar to the platinum eagle proof $100 which have rotating reverse every year but are seldom seen since each coin is nearly $2000 in the 1 oz. size. That design series has had more hits than misses.

Fox: You should read Coinage or the other mags, they have been saying this for months. Mint officials were quoted on this at the big coin show in Chicago last month as well.

They should just eliminate the half dollar, cent and one and two dollar bills, all in one fell swoop. Make a bash out of it, celebrate the coins and bills with throwbacks like silver and copper composition, special designs etc. and then let them die a dignified death.

Add a two dollar coin, make a new 5 cent coin of nickel coated zinc or plated steel and move on.

You mean they (Mint officials) have been talking about ending the production of the half? I sure hope not. I see no reason to stop the productions of halves, because, as I said, the government still does make a profit off them. If they really do start considering this, I will be writing my Congress people to oppose such a move.

I agree. If they quit minting the half dollar (which is NIFC and means even more profit) before the cent, I would probably completely lose it.

You know what would be a great idea for the special year,is to have the mint allow so many of the halves be minted in 40% silver and let the collecting public have a wrack at it! It would be a treasure HUNT. I'd say maybe punch out at least 100,000 out of say, 2,000,000! The government should release maybe one in every 1000 or so? Exciting or no? I can dream at least.-joey

The Half Dollars in its various forms have always been among my favorite coins.

I think I have enough of the Kennedy halves including the Bicentennial design.

I wouldn't be opposed to a design change but I don't know if there is any reason to change it.
