A lateral image looks like a bunch of fine lines, but as the light hits it, a design is revealed... turn it 180 degrees, and a different design shows up. I photographed this by going out in direct sunlight, turning the coin so that the lines were perpendicular to the sun, and the image showed up. Then I used unFREEz (a free animated .gif maker) to animate it. I figured I'd open the floor to anyone else who wants to try photographing one.

25 Syrian pounds, 2003. Currently a one-year type, and likely to stay that way.

Wait, I got some Taiwanese coins in, the latest of which have big lateral images. Here's a .gif of the Republic of China Centennial commemorative (yes... that's my thumb):

Here's a better-made image of a new monometallic 10 ruble coin:

It's not the normal type, but a commemorative of 65 years since WWII victory.

unFREEz is great. I suspect that we will think of many uses for it.

Here is my 1st attempt, with an English penny. It shows William IV looks both ways -
