picked up a bag of bulk "junk" silver today, inside was this 1911 fifty cent piece, looks like a piece of old tape on it, it worked out to 6$ I paid for this coin, what do you think the grade would be on this, and I assume I should just leave it as it is(with the tape). thanks to all who reply.

Good 6.

You can soak the coin in pure acetone (available at any hardware store/walmart) and it will get rid of the tape residue without harming the coin. Make sure you use a glass bowl and a larger bowl to cover the bath with. Acetone will also eat plastic! Let it soak for 30 minutes or so (longer if needed), then rinse well with water, pat dry with a soft cloth then air dry.

pure acetone should get rid of that tape. Depending how long it's been there, there could be a difference in the toning once it's removed, but it's still better than tape. Nice pick up.

You got a really good deal for $6! Pure acetone will get rid of the tape and not harm the coin. And I agree with others of it being G6.

It won't affect the patina/toning, unless it is organic material. However, sometimes there are unpleasant "surprises" hiding under residue like that. Generally the results of acetone treatment are excellent on silver coins with foreign material on them such as tape residue.

G-6 here. Acetone should clear it up as the others said. Post your results after. Very nice find for $6, in reality this is a $10 coin.

Rinse in clean acetone after a bath, do not rinse with water.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

When you do the acetone bath, be careful with your hands and wear gloves if possible. VG-10
