Was wondering about when a coin has a hole..does it completely ruin the value? The coin in the link has good details, but I was wondering what the hole would do for value?

Does it drop it to melt or G-4 or not effect it at all?

Thanks

It doesn't "completely ruin" the value, but it definitely gives the value a good whack. This particular issue apparently circulated a lot; its' relatively high mintage of 818,000 isn't reflected in auction record quantities and they're an absolute Condition Rarity in Mint State. I'm thinking the asking price is fair for both seller and buyer. Figure on it also having been brushed, though.

I think that different types of collectors answer this question differently.

Some collectors and dealers(perhaps the majority)may feel that this coin is only worth melt because of it being a common date for the series, circulated, and crudely plugged coin.

Personally I feel that this coin is a neat piece of history but I wouldn't buy it for anywhere close to what this ebay seller is asking.

The failed punchmark on the head or whatever it is personally kills a lot of the value for me personally. others might see things differently of course. if you like it and want to buy it they do have make an offer up so that means they are willing to take less than the full $39, i'd start low and try to get it for $25-$30 if I was you.

IMO it's a space filler and AT BEST shouldn't got for more than $10-12.
That's just a bit more than melt.

That's about the worst place for a hole. And a "double" hole hurts even more.

I, personally, would pass on this one at any price.

Only way I would buy that coin, would be at melt.

Then I would have her melted, she is in to much pain
and should be put down.

It's like looking at a train wreck, I know I shouldn't look but it's so hard to stop.

Thanks for all the input guys.
