Sometime last year I purchased a large (for me) penny collection that included about 300 Buffalo nickels. Sometime between then and now I've misplaced them. 150 coins isn't a large quanitity, but somewhere in my safe are hiding the culprits. I think. I'm not even sure if they are in the safe but safely stored somewhere else. They are not stellar examples of the series. Some of the coins have dates that range from faint to non-existant (?). Anybody ever have a situation like this?

I feel your pain I purchased a 1973 USSR Mint Set(tough!) from my local shop's bid board a few weeks ago, got it home, and now I have not seen it for two weeks I was hoping to quickly flip it for resale...

My entire coin collection was lost in my parents' house for about 25 years. Had no coins for that period. I only got back into coins when my sister found them in the house after my father's death.

It may not apply here, but....when my kids were younger I always got nervous when the ice cream truck stopped every single day in front of my house ringing the bell, and I had not given the kids their allowance yet. On a serious note, about 20 years ago I misplaced a 1794 fair/poor starred reverse large cent, I thought it was in the safe or maybe in a box with my miscellaneous stuff.Have not found it to this day. I had a buyer for it back then, a local dealer and I still see him occasionally and he always asks me.."hey ever find that starred reverse?" Grrrrrrrrr......

Way back I moved out of an apartment and had my collection hidden so well I forgot it. Didn't remember for a few weeks. New tenant told me that there was nothing left behind. Still, they let me in and I got them back.
Good luck with your quest.

This actually has not happened to me. How could something get lost inside a safe? Unsure of its whereabouts for 10 minutes of searching maybe, but lost? Or why would this quantity be placed outside the safe if you have a safe. Your post needs clarification. Are you saying you bought the Buffalo nickels on top of a "penny collection" and is it 300 coins or 150 coins.

Not coins, but two things have gone missing in my house in a similar fashion: a box of col-erase pencils that I bought off of Amazon and my TI 30xIIs calulator that I bought 10 years ago.

Included with the penny collection was 150 Buffalo nickels. When I went to interfile the penny collection with mine I noticed that the Buffalo nickels was not there. All the pennies were there (went back to the original paperwork to ensure that part of the transaction) but the nickels have vanished. As I recall everything was in the a heavy duty 3 x 5 x6 heavy duty carton with a take off lid. Everything was in my safe (safe and sound) with no kids under 30 in the house but the wife was present throughout the period in question. On at least 2 occassions I added wheat backed pennies to the box. Don't remember taking the nickels out. There is just one #1 suspect in the house (me and a sometimes lapsing memory). There is no way that I am going to ask my wife if she is playing games. (I like my homelife just the way it is (thank you very much).) I don't remembering transfering the nickels to a safe deposit box so it is somewhere in my safe (which is cluttered with many miscellaneous and sundry items. In order to do a full scale rummage through the safe and re-categorizing its contents will be a full day's undertaking, and if that is fruitless it will mean a three hour trek to the bank and searching the box contents there. All this in order to find 150 Buffalo nickels that have either faint or no visible dates left on them. So all told in a worse case scenario I will be spending at least a day and a half searching for coins that probably have little to no value. This time reference will on top of the two hours that I have already spent looking for these coins. So again, when and if I do find these coins I'll have much more time and trouble invested into these coins than they are more likely worth. The funny thing about these coins is that I really don't know what I would have paid just for the coins along because they were part of a larger purchase. I do know to apply the linament to ease the pain and it's not my neck. Is there any monetary value for Buffalo nickels as I have described?

Hesgut, it may be that Ghostriders safe is VERY large and very full (underground bunker perhaps?), and that could explain why the coins can't be found..... I wish I had that problem:)
I have not had that problem with coins yet, but it happens every day with sharpie markers, hammers, and tape measures....

Yes. I stash mint sets safe from me cutting them open. After a few months finding them in the kitchen cupboard is a nice surprise.

I always check the children's rooms. I find many of my older, less valuable coins there. At least they know never to touch my silver pieces!

I misplaced 10 Canadian nickels once. I looked and looked everywhere for them as a few were really neat older ones(to me). The coinstar found them for me when I had to turn in the nickels in the cull bucket. It was like finding them all over again. at first I thought I had just missed a few Canadians when I looked through but then the cool ones I had cared about finding showed up. the coinstar did charge me about $30 to find them though. so its not the most economical method. that's for sure.

Yeah, every time I walk into my shed sized vault, I wonder where my 500 lbs of gold went.
