hi

I have had a 1978 50 cent coin which was newly circulated when I found it.

Have always wondered what the little pimples that completely cover the coin could be. I friend who is a coin collector told me that it looks like Cud marks but I dont know if it is possible to have so many marks on it to make it through the mint.

The photo isn't the best, the marks are raised and not pitted into the coin.

Was hoping to hear some thoughts.

thanks

Its hard to get a photo of the detail. Hope this helps.

Is there someone that I could take the coin to who may know if this is a mint issue

doesn't look like a minting error to me. Looks like corrosive damage.

not corrosive damage, the coin is like new. I have had and stored it since 1978. Its not pitted its fine lumps almost like a sand has damaged the die. It has a raised effect not like a corrosive effect which would be indented into the coin. The other side has the same effect.

I guess an important question to ask is what material was it stored in? Could it have been 'safely' packed away in a non-achival material that has slowly damaged it over the years?

The photo is misleading, I will try to get someone with a micro lens to take a photo.

It looks exactly as it did back in 1978 there has been no deterioration of the coin.

The speckles are raised, some larger than others. You can see a shinny bit between the B in Elizabeth and her head. That is the largest raised lump.

Is there a recommendation on where I might be able to take the coin to be examined.
