So I am a Buffalo nickel collector and the chances of finding any of those is really small. What do you folks keep when searching these rolls and why do you keep them? Is there a list of what is considered to be keepers out there? Thanks.

I like to keep pre 60s nickels because they are over 50 years old. I also just look the older look. You should definitely keep the silver nickels from the war.

Buffalo nickels can still be found with some patience in bank rolls ... my roll find data should illustrate why this is a bad idea to fill a Buffalo nickel folder ... but still great fun. I have roll searched 297,600 nickels from bank rolls ... and have found a total of 53 Buffalo nickels ... that averages to 1 Buffalo every 140.4 rolls searched. Agreed with the advise given above ... I keep all roll found nickels dated 1959 and prior ... plus any foreign coins I come across. David

There are some good years in there that are great collector coins.
Low mintage
39d, 39s, 50d, the 38s 38d
I keep the pre60's minus the 5 most common ones. Then when I have a bunch I can trade them for something else and keep what I want

You can go to the forum about $25,000 in nickels, and see what other people have found in their rolls. I guarantee you when you find your first buffalo, it will be the best feeling in the world. Good luck!

Well the wife and I just searched 21 rolls. We found: 3 War Nickels6 2005 Buffs. 8 older than 1960 and 1 very nice 2009. Not to bad I think. What do you all keep your pre 60 nickels in? I will put the others in those cardboard coin holders.

You did just fine in your 21 rolls ... in fact 3 war silver Jefferson is much better than what we usually find on average. I caution that the 2005 Buffalo reverse Jefferson are not worthy of saving unless in truly stunning mint state ... there were a staggering 936,000,000 of these minted and released. Keep them of course if you enjoy them ... just know that they will always and forever be worth 5 cents. Quote: What do you all keep your pre 60 nickels in? I have an old blue Whitman folder #9009 that houses my Jefferson set 1938 - 1961. I enjoy the folder because it allows me to make easy changes when I upgrade a coin. The remainder of my set 1962 - date is housed in a Dansco album (7113) ... a very elegant way to store and show the coins. Hoping my reply helps ... David

I keep all 2009s like you said, and I also keep all of the 2004-2005 nickels.

I like to keep a few 60's nickels (except 64) that have steps. So few do that the ones in good condition are rarities.
In my last box I actually kept one '64 that was nearly uncirculated and well struck, but that's the first one in ages.
