Nice finds!
I didn't know they could be used as money though.

Almost all of the products of the US and Canadian mints sold are actual legal tender. While the face value may be $1.00 or something the silver, gold or platinum metal content is often substantially higher.
The exception is the Canadian $20.00 silver piece. It has a silver content somewhat less than $20 and is sold at face value. While not intended for circulation, this and other coins issued by the Mints that have a value stated on them are legal tender for that face value, regardless of their metal content value.

Not exactly true for Canadian, at least, but there is a lot of discussion about this already on this site, so I'll leave it at that.

Dare I ask...what are they? They look like commemorative silver dollars of some sort, but I don't get over to the US very much...sooo, what are they?

1986 Statue of Liberty proof silver commemorative dollars. Same silver content as a Morgan or Peace dollar.

I think it's kind of great that many tellers and other bank people are not Numismatically smart.

It's funny. If I was a teller and got something this unusual (for them), I would at least read it and hopefully a lightbulb would go on..ah, silver!
Yeah Carl, good for us and awesome score!

vermontensium: There's nothing on the coin that says that's it's silver, unlike ASEs. I had never seen this design before, so my only tip off was the edge. shootnstars: Right place, right time indeed!
The strangest thing about it was that the teller said she got them from a customer who said they got them from a Las Vegas casino as part of cashing out. I think that's what she said at least. Very strange circumstances for coins to get into circulation temporarily.
