Here's a recent acquisition: It reads WEIHNACHTEN 1914 Is this a known type of medal ? I wonder what W Hardy (a Scottish name) was doing in Vienna in 1914.

It's the very same with the same name.
A bit suspicious, isn't it ?

Only suspicious if it's supposed to be a medal for W Hardy. Not if g's referring to W Hardy in another capacity.

Ah, yes, it might be sculpted by W Hardy.

WWI Christmas 1914 Red Cross Care Facility.
Issued to the staff (and/or patients) at a time when they thought that the war would soon be over ... how wrong could they have been.

Thai-vic, That sounds very interesting.
Were they issued as a memento, for safe passage, as a reward ? Was W Hardy the medallist ?
Where can I find out more, please ?

I think t-v is about there. I googed WEIHNACHTEN 1914 and found a page of medals (many nazi) that alluded to Christmas, but not your exact medal.

That's just a translation from the German. "Weihnachten 1914" likely refers to the famed WWI episode of the "Christmas Truce," when the opposing soldiers came out of their trenches and played football, etc., so this medal could have been invoking it quite some time after 1914. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_truce

philadelphian, I emailed the shop in the link you provided and got this reply from Susanne Schmitz: "Translated it means: private hospital for the red cross, run by Mr. W Hardy. Backside: medal made/ given: Christmas 1914, portrait of a Austrian 1. ww soldier. A medal with very low production amount I suppose, because I believe it was given by the red cross to honour the persons who worked in this non profit, private war hospital, which was owened by Mr. Hardy.
We got it with the things of a 1. ww nurse, but there was nothing else in the lot that had relations to that hospital. The lot is already sold."
