What is an 1809 Lima Peru 2 Reales valued? I have a really nice choice toned VF-35 PCGS. Where should I look up price guides?
How scarce are these ?

That one has the specific Indian head for Ferdinand VII, as the matrices for the new portraits were not there yet for the new king. What I don't understand is why they did that, unlike what was done for Felipe IV (which started with Felipe III portrait's)
Essayer JP, Calico list that one at 200 euros. I'm missing that one for now, so I don't know the regular price for it :)

Hello Bustcollector, Welcome to the forum. Your 1809 Lima 2 reales is a very rare coin. There are 2 different varieties, could you please post pictures of your coin so we can view it? MathieuMa, I think you meant Carlos III and Carlos IV, not Felipe. They just kept using the old portrait until the new image arrived from Spain. It made for some interesting coins, just as the imaginary heads for Ferdinand make for some special varieties.

Oops, correct jfransch :D That was a gross mistake :) Indeed, they were waiting for the new portrait. But why did they invent one in Lima ? (While Guatelama used the previous one for example) Ferdinand VII is very interesting to collect - portrait wise - there are so much variations (most are due to temporary mint during the war for independence)

Wow, your coin is in a superb condition ! Those small denomination are scarce, I've actually seen way less of those than of the 8 reales counterpart. Here is the big one for comparison :

Thanks for the kind words MathieuMa, I try to choose nice examples. Your 8 Real is actually very nice also. Higher grade with a good look. I love the edge reeding....

It was part of the Huntington collection :) One thing though ... I really hate slabs : I like holding my coins, checking them out closely, and most importantly - check their edge ! :)
Your pick is very desirable, with a superb patina :) Regarding the price of your coin, don't you know how much it was sold for ? I tried to lookup prices in recent auctions, but that denomination / date is not much seen ... I actually have no clue of a proper price... anyone else ?

I purchased off ebay many years ago. I liked Peru 2 Reales so I bought it. Krause (Spain, Portugal and The New World catalogue) has no price guide, only a dashed line with "Rare" comments. In fact, only 2 dates are listed this way for the entire series! I suppose this is RARE, especially so nice!

Bustcollector Contact Mike Dunigan, Mexican coin dealer out of Fort Worth, Texas, he is a specialist in the 2 reales series. If you send me a private message I can give you his email address. I would like to see a picture of the slab so I can look it up in the PCGS database. Is it possible you could send a picture or the PCGS number to me?

1bustcollector : Krause is way outdated when it comes to anything not American or modern IMHO. It's a nice way to catalog coins (if you omit mistakes - but every catalog have their mistake anyway ...) - but not for prices.
The price I gave you is more recent - from the main/most accurate spanish catalog for this period, but still don't reflect the market (particularly for scarcer issues) ...

austrokiwi : that's what I checked as well, but the prices are not representative ... For this type, you go from 100 USD to 1000 USD (with a so-so grade to an uncirculated one). This coin being in-between :) It's hard to give a price with only two similar coins, sold in different periods.
