I am not certain as to the age of my coin, but it does seem to be encrusted with an orange-ish-brown rust. I know that while many 17th century coins were made of copper or bronze, many 18th-century pieces were iron. Could my coin in fact be a rusty 18th-century Japanese mon? Thanks!

It appears to be an iron Kan Ei Tsu Ho (寛永e€šå¯³) coin from Japan made during the 18th century. Difficult for me to attribute specific type and mint without the coin in hand or better pics. But does appear to be legit. If a typical type, then worth about 0.50-$1.00. Again depends on attribution. A neat piece of history from Japan

Copper was a scarce mineral back in those days and iron was plentiful. Hence these coins were cast in iron instead of copper. Therefore it is normal to see iron cash coins that are rusted. Some of the scarcer coins have the mint issues but these are often difficult to see because of the rust. If you can identify the mint marks, they are worth a fair bit more.
