It must be the way I am taking picture, maybe wrong lighting
but lately the coins I have been getting do not look near as good as they do in hand.

Today I saw a couple Half Cents that I thought were better then the ones in my 7070, so I picked them up.

After taking pictures I see a more imperfections than I had noticed before.

So I think I have some pros and cons with these two coins.

Pros
- I like them better
- They are better grades then the ones I have.
- I think I can trade or sell my current one and recover
a good portion of what I spent today.

Cons
the 1805 has a hit above the date and, after seeing pictures
some light scratches in front of liberty's face. (these are very hard to see in hand)

the 1832 has what looks like a older cleaning. But seems to be re-toning, not sure if I should leave it on a window sill for a few months or let it tone in album.
Also I see some spots of verdigris or PVC and plan on trying vericare to see if it helps.

I almost did not want to post these, because of the pictures. But I am curious what other opinions will be.

One thing about the 1832 Half Cent that I noticed is the luster pattern reminds of whizzing. The coin is in a high enough grade for mint luster to be present but something about the way the light is reflecting off it looks off to be mint luster. Too bad about the scratches on the 1805 since it looks like a very nice coin otherwise with that nice chocolate brown color. Overall, not a bad pickup!

Both coins are a big upgrade. Lighting is such a critical part of how a coin looks - both in photos and in hand. It is easy to adjust light in hand - rotate the coin, turn on the lights, etc. Copper especially can look absolutely terrible in the wrong light and beautiful and lusterous in the right light. With the camera, there's lots of trial and error to get the lighting etc. right so it reflects how the coin looks in hand. Nearly invisible scratches can look like major flaws in a bad photo. One of the things that stops me from updating photos of coins that are good is all the time required to capture the true look of the coins, not all the flaws.

I very much agree. I tried taking pictures again this morning, and just could not get one, that shows how these
coins really look.

One is better, but still not right.

This is a picture of the coins I replaced. The reverse of the 1805 I had, was pretty bad, AG at best.

Beautiful coins deserve beautiful photos. It looks like you might have most of what you need for good photos. Try the Coin Photography section of the forum for information on how to get great photos with your camera type. You'll know when you have a great photo because the details will jump out and the verdigris will look very scary.

A nice pair of upgrades! I feel your pain in photography rarely do I get a photo that reflects the in hand appearance of the coin.
