I found an old 1863 civil war token and can't find any that look like it, it compares to some but there are differences between that make me believe that it is rarer than others!! For instance, there are no marks above the one or three, and on the reverse side there is a star at the top, says army and navy, then there are two crossed swords with marks in between the blades at the top and bottom. Please help . Thank you

coincurious2, to the CCF.

I believe the token is FULD 16/300, and is either an R2 or R3. Value of around $15 in that condition

There are a few of this die pairing currently on E-Bay right now... listed at much more than what they're really worth, I might add...

I have looked at a number of sites and can't find one that looks like mine. Any other info would be alot of help to me, for instance what the letter below the head and above the date stands for!

Your token is obverse die #16 on this CWTS website page:

The reverse die #300 is pictured on this page:

Here's your token variety in a slab on ebay:

IMHO, a relatively common CWT in circulated condition is not worth the cost of certification. I doubt that this ebay item will readily sell at the price sought.

The L below Liberty's bust is the initial of the diesinker or engraver, Louis Leichtweis who worked at 19 Chrystie St. in NY City; this, according to the Fulds' book, entitled "Patriotic Civil War Tokens" - 1982 edition.

The new Q.David Bowers book, A Guide Book of Civil War Tokens, notes dies 16 and 300 as ascribed to engraver Louis Leichtweis.
