i have a nice red Indian cent in an ngc holder and
the green stuff seems to be spreading
what do I do?

Sounds like verdigris or PVC.

But since it's in a slab, your hands are tied...

My advice is to ditch it quick to someone who's only interested in the plastic, but I guess that's unscrupulous...

i really love the coin and would hate to lose it
will do anything to avoid that
its an old ngc holder maybe send it in to get re-slabbed

I'm sure it's garden variety verdigris, common to all copper coins. Pictures?

Slabs should be stored just as you would a raw coin, with multiple layers. MO LAYERS = MO BETTA

What you end up doing depends on things like the date of the coin, type, grade, etc. Not sure what you originally paid but having it reslabbed could end up costing more than the coin is worth. You only said it's Red. Not much of a description. And too if it's a standard date, nothing rare, then might just not be worth the troubles.
One simple solution would be to break it out and dip it in Acetone. If that doesn't work, not much loss and if you still resend it to a TPGS, not considerd cleaning.
