Amazing find! Wonder how long this key was buried. There are probably collectors out there who will pay a premium for such natural toning.

What do you plan on doing, with your Beauty? I wish my nickels of that era looked like yours. Time to get the shovel out and go bury a couple. Now it's what I call buried treasure. Do you have any other cool coin finds?

I didn't realize nickel can tone rainbow colors. They are such subtle and not over powering colors . I wonder what other nickel coin have such subtle rainbow hues. I have a 1940 era nickel toned grey/black. It's a very odd looking coin.

thx DBM, dont have any other toned like this, but , other nickels, and dimes and quarters for that matter, DO tone in muddy ground, over years, usually a golden, or purple hue. I have some of these, and will post them soon. As for any plans, well I guess I would get this slabbed ASAP, oh, I`m keeping it, I guess.

Looks to be about an EF? One of those that kind of makes all those hours worthwhile! Also the right buyer would pay no discount and maybe some premium for that toning!

Just for the record,I used a camel haired brush and bottled water to lightly dab off the dirt, and I don`t dare go ANY farther with cleaning .I`m sure the coin is still dirty, somewhat. Thanks, for the grade opinion Kuh 85, I checked the coin under every light source, under various magnifications, available to me, and ,I see an amount of luster, especially in the details, and more on the reverse. Beads, band etc.all show EF level,at the VERY least, leaning towards the + side.I will try re-photoing to show lustering, and vital detail areas, then re-post. Thanks for your comments!

I would love to hear more about the toning of this nickel from the nickel experts on this 5 cent piece. It's a wonderful find and so tough in high grade as this one is. Really great to see here and great photos of it too... ...but "my impression" was that nickel should be as close to the original bright clear look as possible,.. and any colour shift or toning in it would be considered a negative.

I can't imagine being turned off by that nice rainbow glow, though. I have a nickel dime that's done the same thing, but the tone is more uniform - they are beautiful in the light

Nice! The toning is naturally amazing. How deep was it (the soil of where you found the coin)?

Well, about 7 or 8" down, in high mineral ground, soft, crumbly mud that was easy to dig into!between a old hill/ shoreline, and a riverbank, so its safe to say it was flooded more than once on that ground, one time or another , in the past.I have found other nickels of the same time period, in that area, but, with dark even toning. this one is the best condition nickel I have found to date, and when I plopped it out of the ground and looked at it,I seen the heads side first. I seen these wonderful colors in the sunlight! I said to myself please be a 1925! I turned it over and seen that my prayer was answered!

Maybe I should bury some of my nickels if they could turn out that way.
