Hello,

After browsing the NGC foreign coin site for the above coin I first viewed all of my options for this coin at:

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...1vs143.2.jpg[/img

Then placed a couple of applicable KM #s side-by-side to more easily differentiate between the ones in question:

The primary difference that I can see is that the km# 143.2 has ‘medal alignment', which I am not familiar with.

Please provide me a visual and written example of this term, 'medal alignment' and any other feature(s) that cause(s) these two coin types to be different from one another.

Thanks,
mdpmedia

"Medal alignment" is when the obverse and reverse designs are the same way up. "Coin alignment" is when the obverse is upside down in relation to to the reverse.

I've never seen a Belgian franc of this type with medal alignment. Perhaps they were issued in specimen / BU sets? (French coins of 1991-3 struck for BU sets had medal alignment whereas circulation coins of those years all had coin alignment).

An easy way to remember coin and medal alignment is to imagine if the coin or medal was suspended and hung from a ribbon around the neck.
If you wanted to see the other side, it would be natural to turn the coin vertically (on a horizontal axis) if suspended from the ribbon, so the the other side could be seen. When this happens, a medal's reverse side should now apprear upright. It is easier to do that if there are a number of medals on a suspension bar on the chest.

Conversely, rotating the coin around a vertical axis to see the reverse upright would mean it has coin alignment.
