An easy way to remember coin and medal alignment is to imagine if the coin or medal was suspended and hung from a ribbon around the neck.
If you wanted to see the other side, it would be natural to turn the coin vertically (on a horizontal axis) if suspended from the ribbon, so the the other side could be seen. When this happens, a medal's reverse side should now apprear upright. It is easier to do that if there are a number of medals on a suspension bar on the chest.
Conversely, rotating the coin around a vertical axis to see the reverse upright would mean it has coin alignment.
