I am relatively new to coin collecting(3yrs) and am wondering what makes NGC and PCGS the best or at least supposedly Rated the highest in the coin grading arena. I have only submitted a few coins to ANACS and have been happy with their company. They don't seem to overgrade or undergrade anything that I have submitted.

PCGS and NGC are the oldest, I believe. If that is the case, then longevity = legitimacy

ANACS is the oldest.

PCGS and NGC are pretty much on par with each other.

If I were auctioning off a 6 figure coin, it would be in a PCGS holder.

Vermontensium that is exactly what I am talking about. Why does PCGS or NGC get that distinction. Believe me this isn't the first time I have heard it. I have been looking at coins being auctioned off on Heritage Auctions and they have quite a few in ANACS holders. Just wondering if there is a push out there.

Recognition. If you look at some of the most expensive coins to be auctioned, they all resided in PCGS or NGC holders.
Accuracy of grading (their opinion) seems more consistent with dealers/collectors.

Consistently high performance over time.
That builds trust.

ANACS and ICG have had their ups and downs.

I feel compelled to state "Buy the coin, not the plastic".

Even the best TPG's make mistakes (a recent dateless 1917 Standing Liberty quarter mistakenly attributed at 1916 comes to mind) so absolute trust in a third party grader should be avoided. Granted most of the attributions are correct, there are still issues with what the grade should be. As long as you are educated about what you are purchasing, especially if it is a coin that is stretching your budget, you can make purchases that will satisfy you.

I personally buy slabbed for authentication purposes rather than grade and even then I study the coin before any purchase is made.

My favorite graders, hands down, are on CCF. You get a range and reason for the grade - as well as education along the way.
