I found out I'm lousy at grading gold, but I'd say AU-55

If you live in or close to Paris, I assume you know that PCGS has their office there...
You can drop off and pick up your coins by appointment.
Oh, please show the rest of your gold!

Welcome. It does look AU and surfaces appear a bit unusual. I always verify the weight, thickness, and diameter of my raw gold. It would good to double check this and all raw gold coins.
P.S. Professional grading is not worth the expense on this coin.

I always control my coins ... it is perfect in weight, diameter and thickness.

Even slightly circulated - as yours is - it's still the most beautiful coin America has ever produced. This example is worth very little over melt value, since it's so readily available in higher Mint State grades, but all the same should be in a TPG slab as verification of its' authenticity against the day you or your heirs choose to liquidate. AU55+ by the American grading scale, gEF by the Continental one.

Although I am not a fan of slabbed coins, but it makes some sense to slab these large and beautiful pieces, simply for their own protection. Gold is a soft metal, and double eagles with their large size, are easily subject to damage. My approach would be to protect it in an ex British Royal Mint acryllic screw capsule that was previosly used for collector NCLT proof coins. That way, anybody you wish to show it to can handle it without too much worry.

Quote: I always control my coins ... it is perfect in weight, diameter and thickness. That is good. You have struck gold! I agree the coin needs "rigid holder type protection" whether you choose professional TPG or not.

I've no experience in grading gold, but it certainly appears AU.

It appears to be at least a high AU.
