VG10, I'm guessing you've paid 25$ and think it's a cool coin .

I agree with VG+ with the reverse being stronger at F12. I would have paid $30 or so. It's a nice coin.

Well, got the coin in the mail today and this is the reason I hate ebay. It has been cleaned. Not just cleaned, but polished. And no, I didn't get a smoking hot deal. I paid FMV for an original coin..... $40. Should I send it back?

Ouch. From the photos I'm at VG-8. If it was original $40 would have been a fair price according to Numismedia. The photos don't look too bad but I guess this is a lesson that you really can't tell until you see it in hand.

The coin looks cleaned in the images but it doesn't appear harshly cleaned. Light cleanings on 200 year old coins are market acceptable and that's what it seemed to be. Why do you think it was polished? In-hand evaluation is what counts and if you don't like it? ebay has made returns a snap.

BH1964, I agree with what you said. I'm just whining because the coins I buy over ebay rarely look as good in person as their photos. This coin has definitely been harshly cleaned and would warrant a details grade from a TPG. In person at a coin show, I would have passed on it. I'll try to post some pics more representative of the coin when I get a chance. For $40, I'll just keep it. Problem free F-12's are going for $150-200. Mine is about VG-8+.

Cleaned? By the light golden re-tone yes.
Harshly cleaned? Maybe pictures are deceiving.
Awaiting new pics.
