Sorry to start a new thread but here is a picture of the 1908 mint set that I need a case for.
You can see the original cased has mostly disintegrated.

Doesn't the fact that it is marred by exposure diminish the possibility of it being "mint" anymore?

Honestly, if someone said to me, here is a mint set and showed me coins that look like that, I wouldn't believe them. (I am not casting dispersions at you in any way).

How do they still qualify as mint?

I am not sure how they qualify as a mint set.
I have saved coins that have been special to but this is the first time I have looked for information on anything.
As this was the inaugural set struck by the mint I had no idea what else to call it.
They are a set that was purchased in 1908/1909, stuck away in a trunk and forgotten until I found them recently.
I would really like to know how they should be described in the event that I ever decide to sell them.
I would be pleased to know how to refer to or describe the set?

A "mint set" is a common way to say "a set that was sold by the government mint in the original packaging." A mint quarters set, for example, would be like the 5 coin sets sold by the US Mint in their packaging, not collected and put together by collectors in third party holders.

I would love to inspect these in hand... it looks as though the cent may have been cleaned (or replaced) already, but it's good the others haven't been touched.

Just because the case looks like crap...don't discount the coins. they still may be mint. Can we see some close up pictures of the coins.

Eg1 It's a 1908 specimen set.
An empty case is valued at $250 according to Charlton's.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Just because the case has deteriorated doesn't change the fact that the coins are specimen strikes. The cases do come up for sale occasionally as the sets were quite often broken up. The cases can usually be found for approx $100-$300 depending on there condition. DO NOT in any way try and clean the coins as it looks like the penny may have been. The value of the set will diminish greatly if you try and clean the coins. Very nice find.

It is interesting see that a coin case stored away in a trunk succumb to such severe damage. Did mice get into the trunk and pick away at the case ?

I'm guessing that the case and coins might have been exposed to heavy humidity over a long time.

The coins look wonderful ,..and make sure that the coins are not handled in any way.

The cent might have been lacquered and even from the above supplied pic,..the cent also looks wonderful. A fingerprint on the cent will damage it,..so be extra careful.

I'd get hard plastic flips and store each coin in a separate one ASAP,...because I don't know if there is any mold 'in or on' that case.

Those coins "as specimens" look awesome. Just a great find...

If you can't find an empty set... another suggestion would be to find someone in your area or perhaps online who would be willing to build you a case to protect these coins.

I have seen some interesting home made boxes on another forum so I'm sure it can be done..

But dang!! those are some peeerrrdy coins ya got there!

I'm curious if an empty case can go for up to $300, how valuable is this set in its condition? I'm referring to coins and not the old case. I'm still pretty new to collecting, and it's nice to get an idea on value of rare sets! When did the mint regularly produce sets as these for purchase?
