I bought a eagle off a local dealer. I took the coin home and weighed it out. It came out to be 3.45 grams instead of 3.39. Should I worry about this difference? I'm using a pocket AWS scale if that helps.

I don't know for a fact but I strongly suspect that's within tolerance.

Heavier is usually ok, but I would really suggest looking at the border for clip marks or dents, checking the design, and using a caliper to chck dimensions. There are tons of fake coins stamped with eagle designs used for jewelry. I talked to a jeweler who told me they often do that. But if its a dealer you trust, that should be fine too.

I am NOT familiar with these, but a check on diameter, and especially a check for thickness may be in order.

If it is made of less dense metals, the weight can be made up by increasing the thickness, which can be hardest to detect with smaller coins.

Very accurate comparison thickness measurements are probably the best way to confirm.

The weight is within 2% agreement, but the thickness may, OR may not be.

When it comes to coins it should fit some basic measurements... diameter, thickness and weight(mass).. The very last measurement should be a specific gravity test. I've just started to learn how to do this on coins that are less than .9999 and it's still absolutely accurate. To use an S.G. test.. make sure you have a scale that can go to 3 decimal places in grams.

There were a few threads a while ago where the OP weighed a bunch of silver eagles and virtually all of them were overweight slightly. So I would not be surprised to hear that most gold and platinum eagles are slightly overweight as well. Giving away a little extra precious metal sure beats a PR problem stemming from underweight coins or having to constantly weigh them and re-mint those that don't meet the specifications.
