I'm planning on getting a metal detector soon, and I had a few questions: 1. The main one I'm looking at is the Garrett ACE 150. http://www.amazon.com/Garrett-11380...tal+detectorIs it good for the beginner? What would you recommend for that price range or lower? 2. Do I need a pinpointer? Will any one work with the ACE or do I need one from Garrett? 3. Mainly I'm going to be hitting beaches. Do I need special digging tools? I'm thinking just a regular kitchen scoop and a net would be sufficient. 4. I know that usually you have to advertise for 30 days before being able to keep the item. Is Craigslist sufficient for this? How about a personal website? Thanks in advance.

1. I couldn't get to the page. 2. I don't use a pin pointer, but if you got one, you don't necessarily need a Garret. They work separately. 3. Your digging tools don't matter, however, something like this would work good. http://www.ebay.com/itm/BeachMaster...em25837e227f4. Not sure what you mean by this.

Greetings, The ACE 150 is a great beginner metal detector. Others in the same category are the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV, Tesoro Compadre, and the Fisher F2. As for beach metal detecting, instead of getting a pin pointer think about getting a beach sand scoop. You can start with one of the hand held ones, there are many on Amazon.

I hunt really rock hard ground, and I don't even have a pin pointer. For one it wouldn't go good in the rocks, but for the beach a sand scoop like I showed would be more beneficial. Still don't know what you mean by the advertising.

In the us, if you find something, it doesn't automatically become yours. To legally take possession, you have to advertise the item for 30 days in a reasonably popular publication to give the rightful owner a chance to retrieve it. A classified ad in one of the state newspapers is usually the standard.

The ace 150 is ok for a child/novice. As for the pinpointer, don't bother with that. If your hitting beaches you can totally forget the ace 150, it will not deliver anywhere near salt water, get yourself a nice cscope beach machine for 50 quid. the advertise thing is rubbish, if its not 'queens' - over 100 yrs old, silver or gold then its yours. There are certain things outside of this rule but if your using an ace 150 you wont find em

cscope do a few models that will go under water, but if you are after a cheap machine that will do this with salt water, you won't find one. Depending on your budget, you will need a PI or a VLF machine. So a Tesoro sand shark or a Fisher pulse machine might be ideal for you. cscope machines are in abundance on Amazon.

The whites coin master gt is a good detector and works great on the beach as well and for the sand scoop you can buy the hand scoop and add a longer handle your self it will cost just a few dollars. Go on youtube and search home made sand scoop

Sweet used ACE 350 on craigslist, $150. Cheap enough that I won't regret it if I hate doing it. :D
edit: I sent an email to the seller asking for a picture of the box, the head, and any accessories. I'm a little worried that this deal (A $300 retail item for 150) might be too good to be true.

Thanks for the advice everybody, but I've decided not to do it. After asking around, I've realized that my back won't handle bending over that often.

Although you have already made up your mind it seems, I rarely bend over much, my back is never an issue (usually my shoulder). Depending on where you plan on metal detecting (I am primarily a beach hunter) if you find a target, I get down on my knees and dig from there.
As for the Garrett Ace 350, thats a great deal, if you decide to get it, inspect it carefully for wear and tear with special attention on the coil and battery compartment.
