My son returned home from an 18 month deployment in Afghanistan this weekend. I spoke with him before he began the return journey and discovered he would be stopping in Kuwait, Germany, and Iceland before getting back to the States. I asked him to try and pick up coins at each stop, along with some Afghani coins.

Tonight he mentions that he managed to pick up some great old coins for me and starts digging in his duffel. I ask which countries he managed to get coins from. He says, "I got 4 old silver dollars for you."

?

He hands me an 1843 and an 1845 Seated dollar and a 1922 and a 1928 Peace dollar.

All 4 were steel.

I asked him how much he paid for them. With a strange look on his face he replied, "A dollar each. Why would I pay more than a dollar for a silver dollar?"

He did leave before I got back into coins, so I'll forgive him this one...

Hi Mathman,
Your son may not know coins, but he's got good sense. Plenty of buyers on ebay and elsewhere would fork over big bucks for modern fakes. I'm glad he set his price limit at $1; the coins are certainly worth that much just for educational value. Can you post some photos?
By the way, please thank your son for his service. It's great that he returned safe and well from his tour of duty.
