Last Friday I for the first time purchased $1000 in rolled Half dollars searching for silver. I pulled out 1 1964 and two 1968 halves. I live in a very small town. What are the averages you are seeing out there? Thanks "LOVE THE HUNT!"

Wow, the bank had all those? I'm a newbie so please forgive me.
I went to my bank today to deposit a check and also asked the teller if it would be possible to get half dollars. He said no, they don't have any, and only get them from customers who bring them in for deposit. He said last time he saw some were a year and a half ago, when some guy brought in hoards of coins to deposit. The teller did offer to take my number to let me know if/when they'd get any and I said no, it's OK for now.
I also asked the guy who works in our cash office at work (retail) and he said he hasn't seen any.
I've just recently become interested in looking at coins, and not so sure what I'm doing yet.

Most of what I get is nothing. I may get a proof if I am lucky.

I hit some beginner's luck on my first box (3 '64, about 12 '65-'69, and a few NIFC), but I think I've found one 40% half since then. That was back in 2009, and I gave up the hunt in early 2011.
Silver has been at its highest sustained price ever, and lots of scam artists pawned off books on the subject of "striking it rich" with half dollar searching. There are rare finds of silver hoards, but those are the exception and not the rule. If you want consistency, it's best to stick to dimes and nickels.
Still, halves are fun if you are interested in the post-2001 coins. I don't think I have ever searched a box that didn't have a couple proofs or other collector coins.

Halves are fun, but my finds are usually dismal. I search several thousand dollars worth a year (bank-ordered boxes), and it's cheaper for me, after time and gas, to just buy silver halves outright at spot+. Five years ago it was great!

I recently opened up a piggy bank that I was filling since 2000. Out of 10 kg of coins, I got 1 Mercury dime and a proof dime. That's it.

Annisette, Go back to your bank and ask them if they will order them for you. I live in a small town and every bank I have asked stated they would order them for me. Keep Checking.

I picked up another $500.00 box and pulled out 5 40%ters, and a coin from Panama. Its a 1973 and I believe 72"s and earlier are silver. It wasn't great but the hunt I enjoy very much. When you see that rim you just hope its something cool.

Arby, 5 - 40%'ers from a $500 box is above average, so congrats.

I am going to keep ordering for a while or until I upset the banks or credit unions. :) Depending how long it takes me to reach my first $1000 in silver will decide if I should continue. I am searching pennies so while I'm picking those up might as well grab some rolls of halves. My oldest coin was the 1962 Ben Franklin. I like finding the silver but finding the older coins is what I like most. Just have fun with it. It is like unwrapping that chocolate bar and hoping for the golden ticket. LOL

@arby96 I have very good results searching halves I am average about 3 40% and 0.5 90% halves per $500 box
@Annisette banks will get 1 or 2 shipments of coin and cash per week the bank can ask them for $500 boxes of halves and the armored cars will deliver them however some banks will not order coins for you it differs from branch to branch but usually bigger banks such as bank of america wells fargo or chase are more likely to order you coins.

Quote: Silver has been at its highest sustained price ever, and lots of scam artists pawned off books on the subject of "striking it rich" with half dollar searching. I've heard radio ads hyping "retirement silver" which claim you can walk into any bank, say 5 (magic) words, and MAYBE walk out with a "handful of silver". I've guessed this offer will sell you advice on asking for half dollars. Any "retirement silver" you get would depend on whether the bank happens to have silver halves. Anybody know the details of this fishy-sounding ad campaign?

My friend, whom I got started in this got a 66 for face from a teller last week, and she knew it was silver. He's gotten several silver coins in the last few months from banks, I call him "The Silver Bird Dog".
