A bit of wear on the chin, and the color doesn't look right to me, so AU details.

Nice AU details but unfortunately, it has been cleaned. I do not see any harsh hairlines from a scrubbing but the purplish-red color indicates that the coin has been dipped and it retoned over time. That coin should be a nice shade of chocolate brown, compare it to similar grade coins that have been slabbed as problem-free. It is a problem coin but quite frankly, I would rather have a dipped coin than a scrubbed coin. Harsh hairlines can really kill the eye appeal of a coin but dipped and retoned coins are a bit easier on the eyes.

The color, the lackluster fields, as well as the purple/orange blotchiness, are all signs of a cleaned coin. This one has been dipped as well as biokemist6 pointed out.
Mid AU details.

The obv. clash & rev. die-cracks make this a keeper, in my books. I like it.

according to numismedia price guide this coin should sell for 165 for au 50 to 240 for au58. These prices are full retail and for slabbed problem free coins. Your coin looks nice but since it has been cleaned or dipped I am not sure 180 was a great price for it. Maybe others on here might comment.

A good price for a coin depends on many things, including how much time and effort you want to invest in shopping around and how much you like the coin in question.

According to the Heritage Auction archives and ebay auction sold listings, problem-free certified AU55 examples range from $160-$180 lately. Cleaned certified examples go for $60-$120. Of course, the retail (or ebay BIN) prices are somewhat higher than auction prices.

These prices might indicate that it could be challenging to resell your coin for what you paid for it. But it does not sound like you intend to resell, but to enjoy. As the folks have pointed out here, it is a coin with nice details and some cool features. And it is almost 180 years old!

Honest advise from a collector who was in your shoes ... slow down on the purchases and accelerate the acquisition of knowledge.

This is a great forum resource to gain knowledge ... but there are books, videos and numerous educational outlets out there to help.

IMHO you overpaid a bit for this coin ... and have now in your possession an example that a knowledgeable collector would flag as 'cleaned'.

Truly ... gain knowledge first ... then enjoy the passion of collecting.

We can help ...

AU55 I agree cleaned and refines. It does have a string strike but you also have some surface issues that would affect value. I would say about $70 would be about right.

I don't know about the cleaning. There are a lot of red or red-brown AU to MS 1835 Half Cents out there from one particular large hoard. This coin looks to be to one of them.
