After three (3) years of deligent searching and almost making a mistake of a purchase, I finally got one of the last three holes in my 3CN collection filled! Can you tell I'm excited?

The four major toughies that range from very difficult to almost impossible coins to find in the series...in business strike....in order (business strike mintage)....are 1884 (1,700), 1885 (1,000), 1883 (4,000), and 1887 (5,000). I obtained a choice AU 1887 a couple of years ago that's a confirmed business strike (still raw).

Last night, I received a AU+ 1883 3CN from Brian Greer. The coin is a no-brainer business strike, with rounded rims, soft dentils and other details, and three die breaks on the reverse.

Ten or twenty years ago, completing a 3CN collection was not quite as difficult as it is today. It's near impossible today if you're looking for choice circulated examples.

I guess I'm still fortunate that the number of 3CN collectors is very low. Now, my mission is narrowing down to those special two.

And, yes, I know there's more than a few of you out there who have completed the series; if not once, multiple times. I hate you! And, I'm just a weeeee bit jealous.

What is 3CN? Looked in glossary, but nothing under CN.

Three Cent Nickel

The most unloved series next to Shield nickels!

Because it's so underappreciated the prices are downright cheap for issues that otherwise would cost many times more if just a handful of serious collectors jumped on board.

I'm seriously thinking along those lines myself. Congratulations, Prethen - only the two hardest to go.

Nice job Prethen!

I think that 3 cent nickels are pretty nice looking coins. I only have one and it's probably a VF-30, but I would like to upgrade that to a strong AU piece. Anyway, congrats on your milestone, here's to you finding the other 2 pieces at a good price, and finishing off the set soon!

Congratulations, Prethen!

This is definitely the time to complete this set. I think this is another of those series that's going to be "discovered" in the next 5-10 years and then prices will soar.

I really do like the design on these coins. It's unfortunate that so many have weak strikes.

Congrats Prethen, and good luck with the last two.

I'd love to concentrate on this series but I'm afraid it's down the list a bit yet. One of these days..........

Shatsi - That's extremely tough to say. If you're lucky you can find the 1883 and 1887 in the 400-750 range in higher circulated grades (throw out the price guides!). For 1884-1884, the price guides are even more meaningless and you'll pay at least $1000 for a VF/XF up to thousands for high grade AU to low grade MS.
