Hi everyone, I wanted to know what pool water might do to silver coins. About 10 years ago, my grandmother tossed some old silver coins into her pool for me to dive and retrieve as part of a little game. Ten years later, I still have those same coins, mainly silver quarters, and wanted to know if they were ruined due to their time in the chlorine water all those years ago. These coins are currently stored with several other rare coins. Should I be worried about chlorine contamination or anything? Probably dumb questions, but just wanted to get your guys' opinions.

Chlorine can cause un-natural toning on raw silver by the formation of silver chloride. Silver chloride is not easily removed by chemical means so such toning is not easily removed by silver dip or other traditional coin cleaning methods.

The good news is, you need to soak a coin in fairly strong solution and/or leave te coin in the solution for a very long time, for there to be any noticeable effect. Dunking a silver coin in bleach, or leaving one at the bottom of the pool for several weeks, might do damage. But a quick drop-and-retrieve within a few minutes would do no harm to a coin, especially if the coin were rinsed off afterwards.

I'm guessing that, ten years down the road, you'd know by now if it were going to be a problem.

If it hasnt done anything yet I wouldnt be concerned about it. I probably wouldnt leave my most valuable coins next to it just in case but other than that it wouldnt cross my mind.

I have a pool. Earlier this year I started wearing a sterling bracelet. The first time I scooped granulated chlorine out of the plastic bucket I keep it in the bracelet immediately tarnished to a dark gray/light black. The tarnish was on the exposed side, the skin side stayed the same. It took a week for the tarnish to wear off.
