I'm thinking there's no argument about whether we see an "E" on this one....

Yes this coin arrived at PCGS yesterday! with other 9 raw vams for grade and attribution.Plus 6 other graded coins for attribution and pedigree, and 6 others for just pedigree. Plus 3 PCGS mint state 1878 S VAM-18 and 18a Spaghetti Wings to see if PCGS will add that VAM to the list of coins they attribute. This one is an UNC but I think PCGS will AU-58 the coin. If they do it will be one of the finest AU-58 Vam-1a1's around!

Given the VAM attributions why wouldn't you use ANACS instead of PCGS? Aren't ANACS supposed to be the VAM experts?

John Roberts is the best around he lives some 110 miles south of me. I have many VAM's that he did the work, with the 1891 O V-1a1 coins a MS coin in PCGS plastic is far more valuable then in anyone else plastic. But Ronnie Milsap, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder could attribute this thing. PCGS currently Attributes all but the sub types and I have them all but my E set is pedigreed at PCGS so that's where it went.

Well the grades are in !! I must not know how to grade anymore This coin just "Low mid AU'ed", SO I have a good number of over graded Vam-1a1 and V-1a2's in AU-55 and AU-58 that are just way over graded! This thing has no breast feathers "normal for a V-1a1" so it has to be a AU-53ish coin. Lets forget about the shushed die and the full luster as well as the lack of contact makes in the fields.

Here's the key, Russ: Look at the largest wreath leaves. By the time strike weakens the breast feathers so much they're invisible, those leaves are also involved, and they're fully struck here. They don't wear as fast as the breast, but they weaken just as fast during the strike. Another hint is the talons - when they're weakly-struck, they start flattening immediately. If they're still rounded while showing lack of detail, it's wear.

Wow! The only bolder "E" I've seen is the "Battle E" stenciled on the bridge wing of one of those Haze Grey and Underway things (retired Navy ya know)...
Hey Russ - has my diminutive partial "E" headed to PCGS town or is it staged with another batch? PG

I had this one at AU58. I think it could have slid into MS60 on a good day.

I do not give coins a bath, and the original luster is unbroken on the reverse. The obv. has contact marks on the face again with what would be called good luster. This my be a case where it has to be dipped. I sold a 87 P Donkey tail that was in an ANACS 62 holder and it was much the same nice original color and they would not cross it at MS anything. The new owner gave it a 5 second bath and WHA-LAA PCGS-62. I Vented and I am OK. Had I not have 4 AU and 1 MS coin in this VAM to compare to it, all in PCGS plastic it would not be a big deal.
