I'm not a collector of, or even a real fan of, Morgan dollars, so this is an unusual purchase for me. One of my ebay search techniques is to look for coins priced at "round" numbers. ... in the case of this high grade 1884-S ... 50 dollars. Amateur sellers tend to sell things at rounded prices. 25 dollars, 50 dollars etc. The seller I'm looking for is selling lamps, magazines, and fishing reels, and only has one or two coins for sale. This was the only coin offered by this particular seller. It's a little "baggy" ... but a tough coin in higher grades, and infinitely more difficult if you want to buy it at a low price. Pictures are pretty crappy ... but that's the way it is sometimes. They're definitive enough for me, for this coin, at this price. Chance

I hope for your sake it's actually a San Fran mint. It kinda looks like a New Orleans strike.

An astute purchase there, Chance. I like your deductive reasoning in spotting sellers. At shows, my favorite dealers are the ones who flip coins fast, deal in volume and are happy with a low profit margin.

When I'm looking for something like this ... from my search results, I subtract any mention of mint marks ... -p, -d, -o, -s ... and from the results obtained, I don't bother looking at any listing that uses parlance of numismatics. As I've already mentioned in an earlier post ... I only look at fixed price listings.
The flattened hair above the ear does look reminiscent of New Orleans minted coins ... so we shall see in a week or so I imagine.

Nice score if it turns out to be an 84-S. Obverse looks like an 84-O; reverse looks like a 81 or 82-S. Keep us posted when you receive it.

Looks to be low-MS. If that's real, it's a rip and a half. I mean, not even a nice score, that's just a total rip. Like, You Suck status.

One encouraging point, was the seller saying "the coin pictured is the one you'll receive"
It may turn out to be a New Orleans issue. I'll post better pictures of it when it arrives whatever it turns out to be.

If it's an O, I assume it's going back?

No ... I take my lumps. The seller didn't tell me what it was ... it was up to me to decide to buy.

Wait, was it listed as an 1884 or an 1884-S? If it was listed as an '84-S, I'd be returning it.

It was simply listed as an 1884 Morgan dollar. If it's an "O" ... I'll still keep it. I have an old Wayte Raymond album that I'm filling. I just won't be able to file this under my "best buys" if it's not a San Francisco coin. Chance

Kinda looks like an S to me. Not bad in terms of condition, certainly much better than 90% of those in my collection.

It's so hard to tell from that picture ... but I'll bet it's an "O" when it gets here. There's enough vertical doubling in the image to make it appear as though there's a diagonal as an "S" would have.
Interesting however ... is that studying some 84-s specimens on heritage, reveals the flattened design above Liberty's ear is actually prevalent on this San Francisco issue.
It's been dispatched from its previous home in Topeka, so in a day or two we'll all know.
