I was counting the daily registers and noticed something about the new $100 reverse; we get to see the back of Independence Hall. There are several subtleties primarily the statue.
Whoa, friend! You can take it from me; that's not the back of Independence Hall! Actually, it's a shame it's always the Chestnut Street side that's depicted in paintings and currency (I think. I'll have to do a little surveying), as the south side is a bit more architecturally interesting. I'll post a pic.
Not that I have been there, I just fiured that it was the "other side" based upon the two chimney stacks being on the front slope of the roof on the building (viewers left hand side) versus being in the back side slope of the roof.
The statue you noticed in front of the building on the new $100 is of George Washington, and has been there since 1869, though not usually included in these renderings. It was paid for with the pennies of Philadelphia schoolchildren, saved up since 1860.
Wait a minute! So sorry! I guess what a Philadelphian considers the "back," facing the square, is not necessarily what others may call the "back!" It seems the side I've been describing is indeed what is on the reverse of past $100 bills. I guess I've walked past Independence Hall more often than I've had a c-note in my pocket!
