I believe the best design work currently minted in this country is not being done at the U.S. Mint. Here are examples of one reason for this belief - Daniel Carr's Nikola Tesla Sesquicentennial Commemorative, in brass and silver. Each is one of 54 struck. As of this posting, a few are still available, here:
Nah, the Mint would ruin him. "No, no, NO Dan, that shows too much imagination and creativity. This is supposed to be a US COIN. That means dull, boring, repetitive, with two dimensional relief."
